Although in many cases treatment of pollutants as close as possible to the source is preferred there are many situations where in-line, or end-of-line, treatment is more appropriate and this is where Ecosol's Net Tech (see here), RSF 4000 (see below) and RSF 1000 (see here) are often seen as more effective solutions.
It is here that our focus on solutions rather than products is evident. We always look to provide the best solution to your problem.
Ecosol specifically developed the patented Rapid Stormwater Filtration (RSF) technology to overcome the limitations of traditional primary treatment systems such as trash racks and other poorly-designed litter baskets.
The RSF 4000 in-line/end-of-line unit removes and retains solid pollutants, free oils, grease, and fine sediments from stormwater flows. It can be fitted to conduits of almost any size or shape and can also accept flows from open channels.
Its unique feature is a hydraulically driven weir that maximises capture efficiency whilst allowing excess flows to by-pass thereby effectively eliminating the risk of flooding.
The RSF 4000 is designed to treat a minimum flow at which it meets desired pollutant criteria without by-pass. The RSF 4000 has an independently-verified capture rate of greater than 98% of solids greater than 211µm and 91% of total suspended solids (refer to the pollutant removal efficiency table below).
Unlike other systems, it continues to operate effectively up to the treatable flow without re-mobilising pollutants.
The RSF 4000 meets all accepted industry standards and guidelines, and has been independently tested at a NATA-approved facility. You can view the results here.
The RSF 4000 is made from durable and reliable materials that ensure longevity and safe operating for its expected life. Only the highest-quality, corrosive-resistant materials are used in the manufacture of all Ecosol units. For more information about materials used and their expected life, click here.
However, the flexibility of our approach means that if the RSF 4000 is not the most appropriate solution for your project you will most likely be able to use one of our other products, click here to learn more.
If you would like to store and use the valuable rainwater treated by the RSF 4000 then you should consider our unique fully-contained RST 7000 Rainwater Storage and Re-use system, that can be installed downstream of the RSF 4000 to provide an integrated in-line water treatment and re-use system. The RST 7000 enables you to use the treated rainwater for watering gardens, in washing machines and equipment washdowns. Click here for more information on this exciting new product.
The RSF 4000 has been installed in many locations throughout Australia and overseas. To see a sample from our projects listing and read some case studies click here.

RSF 4000 drawings are available below for your information.
The RSF 4000 is a pre-cast concrete underground structure designed to filter and remove solid pollutants present in stormwater flows. The unit is designed for use in stormwater drains with the pollutants stored in a capture silo below pipe invert level.
Incoming flows enter the capture silo and pass through the filtration mesh located below invert level on both sides of the silo before entering the clean chamber and then exiting the unit. The unit also has two vertical baffles for retaining oil and grease.
The key to the success of the RSF 4000 is a design that forces a proportion of the filtered water back upstream along the by-pass channels and against the main directional flow. As this water meets the flows entering the inlet to the capture silo, a unique hydraulically-driven barrier is created ensuring all flows up to the TFR or treatable flow rate (see Glossary) are directed into the capture silo, thereby enhancing considerably its capture efficiency.
As flows of greater magnitude enter the unit, the hydraulic barrier gradually breaks down and, in major pipe discharges, allows the excess flows to by-pass, without remobilising captured pollutants. However, the unit will continue to collect and filter flows at least equivalent to the TFR during all conditions.
When the capture silo is full, the water cannot pass through the mesh and the hydraulically-driven barrier can no longer be formed. Concurrently, the pollutants form a barrier across the mouth of the filtration unit, directing the incoming water into the two overflow by-pass channels, effectively eliminating the risk of flooding.
Pollutant Removal Efficiency
The RSF 4000 has an independently-verified capture rate of greater than 98% of solids greater than 211µm, although Ecosol has found that, in practice, even better results are achieved. The composition and quantity of pollutants captured by the RSF 4000 depends heavily on the catchment size, area, land use, and rainfall patterns. However, it typically captures the following gross pollutants:
The defining advantages of the RSF 4000 are that it:
Captures more than 98% of gross pollutants greater than 211µm, 91% total suspended solids, and significant quantities of free oils and grease; |
Does not re-mobilise captured pollutants; |
Has large storage volume; |
Has a versatile modular design that can be customised to meet precise requirements; |
Eliminates the risk of flooding owing to its patented fail-safe by-pass overflow; |
Has low head/hydraulic loss; |
Has a modular one-piece construction (in most cases) allowing simple installation saving time and money; |
Has a shallow depth that reduces installation time and potential for water table problems; |
Is easy and safe to clean and maintain using suction machinery with no manual handling; and |
Has a dewatering facility which means lower waste disposal costs as only solids are transported. |
The combination of these advantages makes the RSF 4000 significantly different and better than other in-line/end-of-line units available anywhere else today.
