Hadspen stormwater outfall - Stormwater quality improvement initiative

Meander Valley is a large and diverse area of Tasmania's northern region, with a varying landscape ranging from alpine mountain peaks to extensively forested areas and productive agricultural lands. The Meander Valley skyline is dominated by the mountains of the Great Western Tiers and World Heritage Area, which form a dramatic backdrop to a rural landscape.

Council as part of its stormwater quality improvement initiative for the protection of its local environment identified the Hadspen stormwater outfall as a potential polluter of receiving creeks and estuaries.  Consequently in March 2011 council engaged EcosolTM
Pty Ltd a specialist stormwater filtration company to provide an easy to maintain, primary screening gross pollutant trap.  The key criteria was that the product must be visually unobtrusive, easily maintainable and effective in capturing and retaining gross litter and must not adversely affect the capacity of the stormwater drain. The EcosolTM
Net Guard proposed met this criteria. In particular it offered council a cost effective system that was able to be easily retrofitted to the existing stormwater out-fall.

Site Details & Product Performance Specification
Net Guard
Maximum designed discharge (full pipe flow) 620 l/s
The EcosolTM
Net Guard Treatable flow rate (TFR)
211 l/s
Estimated Headloss (k) factor 1.3
Maximum pollutant holding capacity 0.810 m3
Outlet pipe size (internal diameter) 600 mm
Inlet pipe size (overall diameter) 600 mm
Loading Capacity Class A
Depth to inlet Invert 1.8m
Inlet pipe Gradient 1%

In April 2011 the unit was commissioned.  Over the next six months council monitored the performance of the stormwater filtration device. Council concluded that the device is effective in capturing gross pollutants conveyed in stormwater flows.  In particular it efficiently captured and retained a significant volume of vegetation, soils and sedimentation that would otherwise enter the receiving contributory.   In January 2012 Council completed the first clean out of the unit removing a total of 62.7kg of gross pollutants.  Of this total 1.7 kg consisted of inorganic litter such as beverage cans and PET drink containers.

In conclusion Council is pleased with the performance of the product as an efficient primary treatment system that is easily maintained and unobtrusive. Council will continue to maintain and monitor the filtration device as part of its commitment to protecting its natural local environment.
