The EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter (also known as a rain garden) is a small vegetated filter designed to provide biological treatment of stormwater run-off at road kerbsides that also enhances the street scape.

The system uses natural and physical processes to treat and retain stormwater and is a widely recognised WSUD treatment measure.

The EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter is designed to carry out multiple treatment processes of stormwater within the one compact modular system. Bio filters provide a total treatment train solution with expected high pollutant removal rates of gross pollutants, total suspended solids, nitrogen phosphorous, heavy metals and hydrocarbons.

Easily installed, the pre-cast, modular unit can be incorporated into must kerbside streetscapes and can assist in the overall aesthetics of the built environment.

Operation

The EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter is a stormwater treatment system designed to carry out multiple treatment processes of stormwater. Stormwater pollutants transported in surface run-off are conveyed to the roadside kerb where they then enter the  Tree Pit Bio Filter. Detention of stormwater within the system then allows flows to slowly filter thought the vegetated and engineered soil medias where physical and biological processes remove pollutants. Treated stormwater then flows to the underdrain pipes to the nearest drainage system.

Applications
The  Tree Pit Bio Filter systems are typically installed on roadside kerbs as an integral part of the streetscape design. The modular pre-cast concrete design is supplied complete with the all underdrain, cleanout pipes and inlet and outlet penetration and engineered soil media including grated access covers ready for easy, safe onsite installation. Its modular design enables it to be installed as a single kerb inlet or multiple inlet linear system.
Hydraulics
The EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter systems are sized to treat between a 1:1 year to 1:3 month ARI for small impervious catchments. Additional detention of stormwater along with careful selection of the appropriate vegetation and soil media enables effective treatment of road runoff. Flows exceeding the infiltration capacity of the system will by-pass downstream to the next kerb inlet.

It is important to regularly inspect the filter media to monitor sediment, gross pollutant and leaf litter accumulation. Additionally any weeds should be removed, plant health and detention zones monitored and periodic flushing out of the underdrain system is necessary to ensure the system continues to perform to its designed specification. The EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filters simple design makes access for cleaning and maintenance easy using standard equipment.

Collection Efficiencies

In recent years modern Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) objectives and principles now applied to most urban development’s require more onerous water quality objectives (WQOs) specifically targeting the removal of suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals. The EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter is designed to carry out multiple treatment processes of stormwater within the one compact modular system. Its design complies with Water Sensitive Urban Design, best management practice which typically predicts the system will achieve the following removal efficiencies:

Quoted removal efficiencies are based on 100% of the surface run-off from the catchment being treated by the EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter up to its maximum designed infiltration rate. Designed infiltration rates may vary with different media's.

Quoted Capture Efficiency (CE) values are intended as a general guide only, and are subject to site specific stormwater quality modelling (MUSIC), giving consideration to catchment size, rain events, pollutant concentrations and media configurations.

Treatable Flow Rate

Careful selection of the soil media and vegetation is necessary along with appropriate ponding depths and detention to ensure optimal performance of your EcosolTM Tree Pit Bio Filter. As the system has a surface footprint of 1.44m2 an estimated infiltration rate of approximately 317ml/s is likely with a 100mm ponding depth.

By-pass Capacity and Headloss

The systems is designed to have a ponding depth of approximately 100mm and will by-pass flows exceeding the estimated infiltration rate downstream to the next available kerb inlet.

Ecosol has a very competitive cleaning service. After each clean we provide a report detailing the extent of maintenance works completed. We believe that it is in your best interests for Ecosol staff to clean and maintain the unit, not only because we are specialists, but also because proper monitoring and maintenance enhances the unit life significantly. Should you use another company to clean the unit, or undertake this work yourself, we request that it be conducted according to Ecosol’s specifications. Otherwise, you may invalidate your warranty, as damage caused by inappropriate cleaning procedures is not covered.

The advantages of using Ecosol to clean and maintain your unit are that you get:
