The Ecosol Soakwell Litter Trap has a built-in pre-treatment litter trap that enhances significantly the life, and infiltration rate, of the soakwell. To optimise infiltration performance the unit must be cleaned and maintained regularly.

The unit can be custom-built to suit most diameter soakwells and is easily retrofitted. It is designed to capture and retain all pollutants conveyed in stormwater run-off larger than 3mm in diameter. The robust design of the stainless-steel filtration basket increases the life of the infiltration layer by preventing larger gross litter and vegetation from blinding the porous base of the soakwell.

The unit is available as a circular pit ranging from 600mm to 1800mm in diameter with depths below surface level of 600mm to 1800mm. It has a storage volume up to 4,580 litres and can service an impervious catchment area of up to 375m2.

It is designed to treat 100% of incoming flows, capturing and retaining pollutants conveyed from impervious areas in a rain event either at point of source or in-line. Independent testing has confirmed that the unit captures and retains more than 97% of pollutants larger than 3mm. Compact and flexible, and installed underground into most designed soakwell systems the Litter Trap basket is designed for use in in typical, medium-density housing estates and small commercial developments.

Cleaning and Maintenance
EcosolTM One of the key advantages of the Ecosol Soakwell Litter Trap Systems is that the units are easily cleaned from the surface by eductor truck (vacuum method). This eliminates any risks associated with manually handling captured pollutants or confined space access.

The key benefit of this system is its low capital cost along with its low ongoing cleaning and maintenance cost. EcosolTM recommends annual cleaning of this product.

Key Dimensions of the Ecosol Soakwell Litter Trap

The EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is able to be custom built to suit most diameter soakwells and can be easily retrofitted.  It is designed to capture and retain all pollutants conveyed in stormwater runoff larger than 3mm in diameter. The stainless steel filtration basket is a robust design that will increase the life of the infiltration layer by preventing larger gross litter and vegetation from blinding the porous base of the soakwell.

1The optimal collection efficiency for the EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is at approximately 60% full. Accordingly, the removal of the constituents is dependent on the composition of the particles, and the bonding of the chemical constituents to the surface of the particles. Additionally the particle filtration performance of EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is dependent on the body of pollutant forming a media already captured by the filter; therefore conservative capture efficiency ranges have been provided.

Hydraulic Specification of the Ecosol Soakwell Litter Trap

TREATABLE FLOW RATE

Treatable Flow Rate (TFR) is defined as the maximum flow rate through the EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap before the flow overtops and by-passes the system.  The EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is designed to treat 100% of incoming flows unit the basket reached 75% full at which point flows will commence by-passing the system.

BY-PASS CAPACITY

The unit has been designed to cater for full pipe flow by-pass.  That is worst-case scenario with the filtration basket full and impervious and with a maximum headloss (k factor) of 1.3.  The by-pass capacity of the unit is determined by the depth of the pit, and the outlet pipe diameter/size and gradient.

HEADLOSS (K FACTOR) AND POLLUTANT HOLDING CAPACITY

Headloss is defined as the hydraulic energy loss (embodied by the pressure reduction) experienced by the flow through the unit as a function of the flow rate through the unit in filtration. The headloss is typically characterised by the minor loss K factor (which is the multiplier for the velocity head to determine the actual headloss). A conservative headloss of 1.3k is estimated for the EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap.

 
 

Maintenance of the Ecosol Soakwell Litter Trap

One of the key advantages of the EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is that a vacuum truck can easily remove all captured and retained pollutants.  This eliminates any risks associated with manually handling captured pollutants.    As the EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is predominately installed as a dry system there is a reduced likelihood of captured contaminants causing any significant adverse environmental impact or nuisance (such as odors and putrefaction). 

The key benefit of this primary treatment device is its low capital cost along with its low ongoing cleaning and maintenance cost.

Maintenance

It is recommended that your EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap is regularly cleaned out of all retained pollutants and at a minimum should be cleaned every year. Cleaning is by vacuum method using commercial eductor trucks.  Cleaning of the unit is completed from the surface level by moving the snorkel over the retained pollutants.

Safety

Careful consideration to the provision of functional and safe access for plant and personnel for maintenance, replacement and cleanout purposes should be considered at part of the planning phase. EcosolTM’s range of Soakwell Litter Trap's have been specifically designed to provide ample access to all areas of the unit for cleaning and maintenance requirements.

Life Expectancy

The EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap has been designed to meet strict engineering guidelines and manufacturers’ guarantees. The unit has an expected life span of 25 years. 

Warranty

The EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap has a two-year warranty covering all components and workmanship. EcosolTM will rectify at no charge, any problems that fall within the warranty terms. However, damage caused by outside parties is not covered by the warranty. This includes instances where the client cleans the unit or employs another company to do so, and damage is caused by inappropriate cleaning procedures.

Materials Specifications

All materials and products used in the manufacture of the EcosolTM Soakwell Litter Trap design are constructed to the relevant Australian Standards and are specially selected for their durability. Each unit has been engineer-designed and also meets Australian Occupational Health, Safety, and Welfare and industry codes of practice requirements
